Assessment and diagnosis of ADHD

The assessment and diagnosis of ADHD is a thorough process that involves evaluating symptoms, ruling out other potential causes, and gathering a detailed medical and psychiatric history. It typically includes multiple visits, physical screenings, and input from parents, teachers, and the individual. Coexisting conditions like learning disabilities, anxiety, or depression often accompany ADHD, making accurate diagnosis essential. Psycho-educational testing may be necessary for children struggling academically to identify learning disabilities. Diagnosis requires that symptoms be present before age twelve and impair daily functioning across multiple settings.
